DEGREE PROGRAMS

Bachelor of Music in Performance: Piano (Curriculum A)

The Bachelor of Music in Performance: Piano (Curriculum A) is appropriate for those who wish to work in performance and teaching. Those who wish to teach in elementary or secondary schools should select the Performance Major with Teacher Certification (Curriculum B), or a curriculum in the Department of Music Education.

Pre-college Music Preparation:

Eight to twelve years of piano study; repertory to include representative compositions of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods, and the 20th century. Memorization is expected.

Curriculum

Core Curriculum
Eight terms of private performance instruction including weekly studio class and piano forum, and presentation of a recital
Twelve to twenty hours of ensemble courses including Sight-Reading Skills for the Piano, Piano Accompanying, and large ensemble
One semester of conducting
Additional coursework in music theory including Basic Theory at the Keyboard, Analysis of 20th-Century Tonal Music, and one term of 18th-Century Counterpoint
Two terms of advanced piano literature
Thirty hours of non-music courses including the University's two semester English writing requirement and two terms of French, German, or Italian
Electives to complete a total of 125-128 hours

Minimum Repertory Requirements for Graduation

Minimum repertoire for graduation includes such works as suites, partitas, preludes and fugues of J. S. Bach; sonatas of Scarlatti, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven; small and large form compositions of Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Liszt; music of Debussy and Ravel; music of Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Prokofiev, Bartók, Copland, and so forth. This should total at least three full recital programs and two concerti (one preferably by Mozart or Beethoven).
