Karen Fournier completed her Ph.D. in Music Theory at the University of Western Ontario (London, Canada), where she engaged in research about social epistemology and the growth and development of knowledge in the field of music theory. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of her research, she has published articles in the areas of music theory and cultural studies and has read papers at a variety of national and international conferences in the United States, Canada, and Spain. Her second area of interest, musical influence in the early British punk movement, has taken her most recently to England, where she presented a portion of her work on the music of the Sex Pistols at the Royal Musicological Society.

Prior to joining the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance in September 2005, Dr. Fournier taught as an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin, and in Canada as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Western Ontario, the University of Guelph, and Brock University. An award-winning pedagogue, Dr. Fournier currently holds the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Theory at the University of Michigan.
